Some ice nucleation characteristics of Asian and Saharan desert dust

چکیده
The large (7 m×4 m cylinder, 84 m3) AIDA (Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) cloud chamber facility at Forschungszentrum, Karlsruhe, Germany was used to test the ice nucleating ability of two desert dust samples from the Sahara and Asia. Aerosol samples were lognormally distributed with a mode diameter of 0.4(±0.1)μm and geometric standard deviation of ∼1.7(±0.2). At temperatures warmer than −40C droplets were formed before ice crystals formed and there was generally no deposition nucleation observed. At temperatures colder than −40C both dust samples exhibited dual nucleation events that were observed during the same expansion experiment. The primary nucleation event occurred at ice saturation ratios of 1.1 to 1.3 and is likely to be a deposition nucleation mode. The secondary nucleation event occurred at ice saturation ratios between 1.35 and 1.5. We cannot categorically determine whether this ice nucleation event is via a further deposition mode or a condensation mode, but the presence of some soluble material in the dust samples leads us to favour the latter process. The activated fractions of desert dust ranged from ∼5–10% at −20C to 20–40% at temperatures colder than −40C. There was no obvious difference between the nucleation behaviour of the two dust samples. It is shown that Saharan soil has the potential of producing bioavailable iron when illuminated with visible light and also it contains some essential macronutrient and micronutrient elements. In this study, these properties of the desert soil were tested on the certified wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L. var. gonen 98) using Hewitt nutrient solution, illuminated and non-illuminated soil so...
متن کاملLaboratory investigations of the impact of mineral dust aerosol on cold cloud formation
Dust particles represent a dominant source of particulate matter (by mass) to the atmosphere, and their emission from some source regions has been shown to be transported on regional and hemispherical scales. Dust particles’ potential to interact with water vapor in the atmosphere can lead to important radiative impacts on the climate system, both direct and indirect. We have investigated this ...

The deposition mode ice nucleation efficiency of various dust aerosols was investigated at cirrus cloud temperatures between 196 and 223 K using the aerosol and cloud chamber facility AIDA (Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere). Arizona test dust (ATD) as a reference material and two dust samples from the Takla Makan desert in Asia (AD1) and the Sahara (SD2) were used for the expe...
متن کاملSaharan dust storms and indirect aerosol effects on clouds: CRYSTAL-FACE results
[1] A recent field experiment in southern Florida using aircraft and polarization lidar shows that mineral dust particles transported from Saharan Africa are effective ice nuclei, apparently capable of glaciating a mildly supercooled ( 5.2 to 8.8 C) altocumulus cloud. These results are similar to those from Asian dust storm particles observed over the western US, suggesting that in the northern...
